On day 6, after 6 hours of climbing in the darkness, we reached the Kilimanjaro summit (19,341 feet) to see the sunrise on my 50th Birthday. The views were stunning on that cloudless morning, and we were overwhelmed from both the effort and the sense of great accomplishment!

Happy Thanksgiving!! We all have so much to be thankful for; I know that Liz and I surely do. Included in our thanks this year is the Johnamanjaro fund raising thus far. Liz and I are humbled and blown away by the generosity of our friends and colleagues. We can’t believe that we have hit our initial goal as of Thanksgiving Day, less than a month from the start. Over the weekend of October 19th, Liz and I were in Phoenix, Arizona. We decided to get up early and take a hike up Camelback Mountain. The weekend of September 20th, Liz and I visited Colorado Springs for two reasons: to catch up with our West Coast friends, who met us there, and to check how we’d react to the altitude at the top of Pike’s Peak, which is 14,114 feet above sea level at its summit.
